The Water Industry Alliance is pleased to partner with WIA Member, Kain Lawyers and innovation agency, TechInSA to invite you to a breakfast seminar to learn about how businesses in the water industry can attract investment to facilitate growth, or ready themselves for an exit.

TechInSA is the South Australian Government’s innovation agency, tasked with helping to grow the high-tech sector in South Australia and bring innovative South Australian products and technologies to global markets. Start-ups and early stage companies can access customised programs including grants, business and marketing assistance and lab and office space to help them to take that next stage and commercialise.

Mark Henderson - Commmercial Director, Kain Lawyers

Mark has degrees in maths and computer science as well as law and has practical experience in the IT industry, all of which adds up to a lawyer who looks at your transaction from a different perspective

Mark is an experienced property and commercial lawyer with 15 years’ experience advising clients on their business and contractual arrangements, both in Australia and in the United Kingdom, where he spent three years working at a top 40 law firm.

Mark advises clients on all aspects of their property dealings including acquisition, disposal, development, leasing or due diligence. Whenever dealing with clients, Mark works with them to achieve the best commercial outcome for their business.

When advising clients on their commercial dealings including service agreements, terms of trade, business sales, joint ventures, mergers, succession planning and corporate structuring, Mark brings a pragmatic approach to cut through the legalese and deal with the issues that matter.

With his background in IT, Mark is able to bring practical knowledge to his legal advice to clients in the technology area, including commercial arrangements for software development, licensing and implementation.

Mark advises clients in the construction industry who act as principals, contractors and subcontractors.

He is experienced in advising on and using industry standard documents, including the Australian Standard suite and the Master Builders of Australia Suite.

Mark has advised water industry participants in South Australia for over ten years. He has advised on the spread of purple pipe and the installation of pipeworks for stormwater and wastewater recycling and reticulation systems as well as supply and service contracts throughout the industry. He advised clients on, and made submissions to the government about, the Water Industry Act so he can help you understand your rights and obligations.

Mark is listed as a recommended Property & Real Estate lawyer in the 2017 edition of Doyle's Guide.

Michael Garry - Director, Kain Lawyers

Michael is an experienced corporate lawyer who has advised some of Australia’s biggest corporates and funds on their most complex and strategically critical transactions. Michael’s experience is broad and includes mergers and acquisitions, business structuring, private equity transactions, foreign investment, capital raising, managed funds and financial services advice.

Prior to joining Kain Lawyers, Michael spent a decade at a top tier law firm in Sydney and Adelaide advising high profile clients on corporate transactions across a range of industry sectors including financial services, private equity, consumer goods, transport, agri-business, property and wine and beverages.

Michael is known for his pragmatic and commercial approach. His recent M&A experience includes acting on the acquisitions or disposals of some of Australia’s best known companies including R.M. Williams, Seafolly Swimwear, Barossa Valley Estate and Scott Petroleum.

Michael has acted on the establishment and offering of a number of managed funds and has advised specialist fund managers on the establishment, restructure or investment in Australian retail and wholesale funds specialising in property, infrastructure, financial instruments and agri-business.

Michael also has extensive experience advising on solvent and insolvent restructures, having advised on the recovery of over $250m in funds invested in Lehman Brothers CDOs following its collapse and the $5bn restructure of the Centro Property Group.

Michael is listed in the areas of M&A and Corporate Law in the 2018 edition of 'Best Lawyers in Australia' and is listed as a recommended Corporate and Commercial lawyer in the 2017 edition of Doyle's Guide.

Dr Judy Halliday - Director, Industry Development, TechInSA

Judy Halliday has more than 25 years’ experience in technology commercialization and innovation as an academic and industry professional.

Judy is currently the Director, Industry Development at TechInSA. Prior to this, Judy spent nearly ten years at UniQuest Pty Ltd and before that was a senior executive at Alchemia Limited, an ASX listed Biotech Company.

She has published in academic peer reviewed journals and has been a successful applicant in competitive grant programs as both an academic researcher and as an industry partner.

Judy is an inventor on granted patents and has been involved in raising millions of dollars for multiple start-up companies. She has negotiated multi-million dollar licensing transactions and collaboration agreements in the commercialization of early stage technologies.

Judy has been a non-executive director of start-up companies including Aussie Colours Pty Ltd, Nexgen Plants Pty Ltd, Q-Sera Pty Ltd, QUE Oncology, Inc, GRW Pty Ltd and Dendrimed Pty Ltd and a member nominated Director of the Australian Society for Medical Research. She has been a member of venture fund investment committees for the Medical Research Commercialization Fund and Uniseed.
