South Australian River Murray Sustainability-Irrigation Industry Improvement Program
The South Australian River Murray Sustainability Program (SARMS) will build strong and sustainable irrigation communities and help to secure water resources needed for a healthy environment and a prosperous state.
SARMS is a $265 million funding package resulting from collaborative efforts between the Australian and South Australian Governments and the water industry. It comprises two areas of investment: the Irrigation Industry Improvement Program (SARMS-3IP) and a suite of regional development, research and innovation programs that includes the redevelopment of the Loxton Research Centre.
SARMS will be delivered by the South Australian Government and has been designed to achieve the outcomes sought by the Water Industry Alliance in their original River Murray Improvement Program proposal. For further information on SARMS-3IP, head to the PIRSA website .
New Milestone Reached for SARMS - 3IP with $177 million Invested into River Murray Irrigation Projects
$177 million has now been offered across 186 River Murray-based irrigation projects under the Irrigation Industry Improvement Program (3IP), with Round Three’s projects recently announced. More than $13 million will be shared between 25 projects in this third round of 3IP, made available through the South Australian River Murray Sustainability (SARMS) Program. Projects include new diversification into high value pistachios, the expansion of netting across citrus crops, a state-of-the-art hydroponic blueberry farm and the reactivation of dormant and unproductive land. As a result of Round Three, an additional 56 FTE long-term jobs will be created in these River Murray communities, growing the overall estimated new jobs to more than 550 by the time 3IP finishes in mid-2019. The latest round of projects will also see South Australia reach around 35 gigalitres (GL) of water ready to return to the River Murray - bringing the State to within 5 GL of the program’s 40 GL target for water recovery.
