Through a program of funding provided by the Commonwealth Government, South Australia has developed a strong capability in the design, planning, construction, monitoring and maintenance of wastewater treatment plants for small communities.

These wastewater treatment plants are typically sized for up to 3 ML/day, are designed to produce water for a range reuse purposes while being cost effective on whole of life costs and highly reliable.

The largest program of funding was the ‘Statewide Wastewater Recycling’ project which as of 31 May 2011, has achieved the following ‘headline’ results:

  • 28 councils completed and delivered 56 wastewater recycling projects;
  • $75 million capital expenditure on essential infrastructure in regional SA;
  • $16.94 million Australian Government grant funds allocated to councils;
  • 7,534 ML per annum estimated volume of treated wastewater recycled with an equivalent reduction in the demand on the River Murray and other water resources.

While this funding program focussed on the needs of the local councils a range of smaller and containerised solutions have also been provided for resorts and mining camps.

Remote and Decentralised Wastewater Treatment has been implemented in South Australia where small communities have historically been using less sophisticated wastewater capture and treatment methods (eg septic systems) which when fail have been shown to contribute to environmental pollution and health risks.

The benefits of small scale WWTPs is that they reduce the need for transport of wastewater by treating it locally, can be implemented in a small footprint and the output water can be optimised to meet required standards for a potential reuse purposes (eg irrigation or industry). With modern SCADA and telemetry the WWTPs are monitored centrally and specialised staff can only attend them when specifically needed.

These WWTPs treat water that could otherwise contaminate groundwater or surface water sources or potentially impact environmentally reliant businesses (eg irrigation and aquaculture).

The Water Industry Alliance (WIA) is currently facilitating this group and enquiries of the cluster can be made through the WIA.
