Australia is enjoying millions of dollars in water savings from advanced water leakage detection and repair programs. On a global scale, Australia loses approximately 8 to 12% of water supplied from watermain leakage, compared to up to 40% in other countries around the world.
Sydney Water has run Australia’s most progressive program for more than 10 years utilising the expertise of Water Loss Management Consultant Alan Marlin and Australia’s leading leakage detection company, Detection Services.
The initial pilot project, which was formed in response to the government’s drought strategy and demand management programs, detected and repaired leakage in 350 kilometres of mains in its first year.
Due to the project’s ongoing success, today Sydney Water undertakes 18,000 kilometres of leak detection a year as a permanent management practice.
“At the commencement of the project 10 years ago, Sydney Water’s system was leaking an estimated 188 megalitres a day,” Alan says. “We reduced that to 105 megalitres a day. Sydney Water now has one of the lowest percentages of water lost to leakage in the country at 7.8% of supply.”
Of the 105 megalitres being saved, Alan says 65 megalitres are attributed to the leakage Detection Program, another 12 megalitres are saved from the Pressure Reduction Program and approximately 6 megalitres can be attributed to speed of repairs, improved maintenance practices and renewals.
“The 65 megalitres saved daily from Sydney Water’s detection program results in savings of $45 million a year in water costs for an annual investment of $7 million of leak detection and repairs,” Alan says.
Detection Services is the largest Australian leakage detection company operating for over 18 years and undertakes over 20,000 kms of leak detection annually for all the major water authorities throughout Australia, New Zealand and internationally.
Detection Services’ technical and consulting services also extend to trunk main leak detection, condition assessment and demand and pressure management services.
