While global corporations talk of triple bottom line outcomes, the City of Salisbury in Adelaide’s northern suburbs has achieved just that - a sustainable environment, economy and community through Australia’s first integrated water creation management system.

Concerned about the millions of litres of stormwater disappearing from their catchment out to sea every year, Colin Pitman, Director of City Projects for the City of Salisbury knew there must be a better way. “In 1991 we decided to research whether urban stormwater that was treated using passive cleaning methods, such as wetland reed beds, could be stored in an initially brackish aquifer and then recovered when needed at a quality that met Australian Water Recycling Guidelines,” Colin said.

“The Parafield Stormwater Harvesting Facility has certainly delivered. We have now developed more than 50 wetlands covering over six square kilometers and built 22 aquifer storage recharge bores.

“Council reserves 50% of the recycled water for municipal use, industry takes 41%, residential users 5% and schools and education facilities 4%.

“More than a quarter of all stormwater flowing through the city is now captured and there is a goal to increase this even further.”

The wetlands are now home to more than 180 species of birds, including 24 species of migrational waders of which six are protected. Thirty seven native aquatic vertebrate have been identified, including seven reptiles, seven mammals, five fish and four native frog species. A city of a 1,000,000 people could typically harvest enough water from their stormwater to reduce demand on traditional water sources by 30%, more than could be saved on harsh water restrictions.
